Flex, Sept, 2009

I’m still eating offseason foods, including my favorite junk foods at night while I watch Nancy Grace’s crazy ass on TV: jellybeans! I love jellybeans, man. I can eat them all night long. Even if they fall into my bellybutton or the grooves of my abs, I’ll still eat them. I also love Lay’s Salt & Vinegar potato chips and Life Savers Gummies.

SHE WAS THE IRREPRESSIBLE BABY Snooks on the radio, but she could also open your tear ducts with the shattering love ballad “My Man.”

The great Fannie Brice (1891-1951) had an earthy, delightfully klutzy, unapologetically Jewish stage persona and presence that spellbound the crowds and played hilariously off the bevies of glamorous show-ladies in the Ziegfeld Follies.

Along with fellow Follies co-superstars Will Rogers and W. C. Fields, she was the toast of her era, but unlike them, we’ve seen her too little on screen. It ain’t fair.

Brice was both one of the great stage comediennes and a superb heart-rending torch singer as well

AMANDA LIPITZ TEACHES YOU HOW TO GET A SHOW TO BROADWAY-AND HOW TO LOOK GOOD DOING IT. By Abigail Rasminsky

Seven years ago, when Amanda Lipitz was a junior acting student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she, like most college kids, went home for Christmas break. But instead of lounging around, she and her friend Michelle Waranch embarked on a project to brighten the lives of sick patients in hospitals.

In two weeks, the girls raised an astonishing $25,000 and started a Baltimore-based not-for-profit called The Stained Glass Project. With the funds, they created books of inspirational quotes and original artwork and gave them to hospital chemo wards for free

At last week’s closing ceremony of the Ontario Technological Skills Competition, Skills Canada – Ontario announced the gold, silver and bronze winners of the team home building competition.

The home building competition, sponsored by Lowe’s , took place on May 5 and 6 at the Manulife Financial Sportsplex at RIM Park in Waterloo, where teams from secondary schools all across Ontario tested their technical skills in various aspects of residential construction. Starting with only technical drawings and project specifications, the competition culminated with teams finishing 8′ by 8′ by 9′ mini-homes which included working electrical and plumbing rough-ins over two days.

The gold medal went to Garette Surmanski, Shane Mcbean, Scott Holmes and Jessica Andrews from the Thames Valley District School Board; silver was awarded to Alex Swan, Ben Perry, Andrew Dick and Mike Ball from the Limestone District School Board and the bronze medal went to Chris Lingard, Steve Kolkman, Nathan Kolkman and Andrew Fulton from the Huron Perth Catholic District School Board.

The homes were evaluated during every stage of their construction by a panel of expert judges including Lowe’s guest and honourary judge Bryan Baeumler, host of HGTV’s DIY Disaster Cottage who met with the enthusiastic and talented students.

“I think the home building competition is amazing. It’s great to see so many kids involved and how enthusiastic they are. I’m impressed by their skills in residential construction. Being in the trades myself, we’re always looking for tradespeople and this competition shows young people that the trades are a great way to go,” said Baeumler.

This competition kicked off on Monday, May 5, with Skills Canada – Ontario announcing a significant new partnership with Lowe’s Canada. The $200,000 grant from the Lowe’s Charitable and Education Foundation is the largest corporate contribution ever received by Skills Canada – Ontario.

At the opening day luncheon, Don Stallings, President of Lowe’s Canada, expressed how excited Lowe’s is at partnering with santa monica contractor such a valuable organization.

“Lowe’s is proud to work with Skills Canada – Ontario to prepare Ontario’s future skilled work force and to help youth in our communities excel in their chosen career paths,” said Stallings.

In addition to Skills Canada – Ontario and Lowe’s representatives, The Hon. Minister Milloy and The Hon. Minister Wynne participated in the announcement ceremony

This Old Computer.

Law Office Technology Review, April, 2002

It doesnt cost much to buy a new PC / Intel desktop computer, today. A brand new Pentium 4 with almost two GHz (GigaHertz) clock speed, a huge hard disk, CD-Burner, DVD player, modem, network card, Windows XP (if that is an improvement) and so forth shouldnt cost a thousand dollars. But what about that two years old computer you bought for Y2K protection?. The sub-GHz speed isnt bad, but the 64 or 128 MBytes ( MegaBytes) of RAM (system memory) isnt a lot and that 10 or 15 GByte (GigaByte) hard disk drive is beginning to reach its limits for data storage

New initiatives promote green home building

Real Estate Weekly, Sept 5, 2007

First Lady Silda Wall Spitzer and David D. Brown, executive director of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), announced two initiatives to promote the construction of green homes and State-owned buildings throughout the State.

Building on her effort to encourage homeowners throughout the State to incorporate simple energy reduction features into their homes, Spitzer announced that the administration will offer legislation that offers a direct incentive to homeowners who build or renovate homes that meet green building criteria. The amount of the incentive will be based on the size of the home, with a cap of $10,000 per home, and help offset the typical 5% increase in construction costs when “green” or “sustainable” features are incorporated.

The Dormitory Authority announced that beginning in 2008, all new State construction projects and major renovations managed by the Dormitory Authority will meet LEED standards established by the United States Green Building Council.

Both announcements are the latest initiatives in Governor Spitzer’s energy and environmental agenda. Earlier this year, the Governor unveiled his “15×15″ plan to reduce energy use by 15% from forecasted levels by the year 2015 through new energy efficiency programs intended to reduce energy bills, greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollution.

“Buildings are part of the problem of climate change, but they can also be part of the solution if they meet a higher standard for environmental sustainability,” said Silda Wall Spitzer. “This legislation offers an economic incentive to everyday New Yorkers who would like to make their homes more energy efficient, but are concerned about higher construction costs.

Buildings are responsible for 39% of all greenhouse gas gary silverston emissions produced in the United States

Oct. 27–Just about every portable computer in the laptop and notebook category has some kind of built-in device to move the mouse pointer.

Most have the ubiquitous trackpad. Others such as the IBM Thinkpad models for example offer an additional cursor control such as the TrackPoint. That’s the little red nub found at the center of the keyboard you operate like a tiny pressure-sensitive joystick using a fingertip. And while there’s quite a number of these mouse alternatives out there for the mobile crowd, I like many still prefer using a mouse with my laptop
