Husband of former Oklahoma CASA exec ordered to stand trial

Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), Nov 23, 2009 by Marie Price

The husband of the former executive director of the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association was ordered Friday to stand trial on charges that he embezzled funds from the organization.

A trial date has not yet been set for Eugene M. Naukam III, 65, who is accused of 41 counts of embezzlement and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. He worked as a special projects coordinator for CASA when his wife, Anna Naukam, was executive director.

The Edmond couple were indicted by the multicounty grand jury in August on allegations that over a six-year period they spent CASA funds on home remodeling, football tickets, cosmetic surgery, vacation, college, dental and veterinary expenses and personal items such as clothing.

Anna Naukam, 51, pleaded guilty in September to 148 counts of embezzlement and one count of conspiracy. She was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation and ordered to pay $549,024 in restitution. Anna Naukam was terminated from CASA in October of last year.

When the indictment was unsealed, Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson said the Naukams were accused of using taxpayer and donated funds for a hot tub ($2,704), football tickets, cosmetic surgery ($8,100), lingerie, granite countertops ($6,004), college tuition for the Naukams’ son ($12,974), and other personal uses.

A state audit report issued in August outlined more than $650,000 allegedly misused by the Naukams.

According to the audit, Eugene Naukam began receiving a $40,000 annual salary in 2006, although Anna Naukam told others he was a volunteer.

The audit stated that Eugene Naukam obtained a CASA credit card in 2002, although he did not become an association employee until 2006

Showering you with germs

Muscle & Fitness, Jan, 2010

Because you work out a lot, you probably spend more time in the shower than the average guy. While you do this for your hygiene and health, it may actually work against you, according to a study from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Researchers tested 50 showerheads in nine cities in seven states, and reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that 30% of the showerheads harbored a bacterium on the inside.

The bug is dispersed in the air when you turn on the water, and can get into your lungs and cause lung infections. This typically isn’t a problem for healthy adults, but if your immune system is compromised (such as after a brutally intense workout), it could be problematic. One way to avoid this is to use a metal showerhead that tends to harbor less bacteria

Ekinops Wins the Fastest Growing Telecom Company Award in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 French Competition

Business Wire, Nov 19, 2009

PARIS — Ekinops, a leading optical transport equipment provider, clearly stood
out in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 competition, a prestigious annual
award that honors the fastest growing French technology companies.
Ekinops received a first place ranking in the national award for the
Telecom and Network industry sector.

The Deloitte Technology Fast 50 competition ranks companies based on the
percentage of revenue growth over a five-year period (2004 – 2008).
Ekinops achieved a remarkable revenue growth rate of 2,938 percent over
this period.

The optical transport market is facing many challenges; despite the
economic crisis, telecom carriers have to rapidly upgrade their network
to meet the growing need for increased bandwidth. Applications and
services like video, TV over IP (Internet Protocol), new smart phones,
and new next generation high speed wireless networks require
significantly more bandwidth at the metro, regional and long-haul
levels. The Ekinops 360 line of optical transport equipment enables such
rapid network capacity increase in a very flexible and upgradable way,
and at a very attractive price, declared Didier Bredy, CEO of Ekinops.

Being able to attract a number of global customers and reach this level
of growth over five years says a lot about Ekinops product quality and
the excellence of its management, declared Eric Morgain, Partner
responsible for the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 program. Ekinops
demonstrated that its growth strategy is the right one.

The theme of the 2009 Technology Fast 50 program was The revolution
enabled by technology. In the midst of an exceptional worldwide
economic crisis, Deloitte Technology sought to highlight the quality of
innovation and the capacity to create new uses for technology, two
criteria that fit perfectly with the Ekinops mission.

Campaign to encourage the establishment of meaningful emissions
standards from UN Climate Change Conference

STRATHAM, N.H. — The
Timberland Company (NYSE: TBL), a leading outdoor footwear and
apparel company and environmental steward, today announced the launch of Dont
Tell Us It Cant Be Done a movement that encourages citizens of
the world to challenge government leaders attending the United Nations
Conference on Climate Change (COP15) in Copenhagen this December to set
standards for emissions. Dont Tell Us It Cant Be Done is a global
campaign that urges the public to get involved in the climate change
debate by giving them a forum to let their voices be heard.

In December, 192 nations from around the world will come together in
Copenhagen to attempt to ratify a new global climate change treaty,
designed to replace the soon-to-expire Kyoto protocol. COP15 represents
a significant opportunity to take action on climate change. Through the Dont
Tell Us It Cant Be Done campaign, Timberland hopes to rally the
power of individuals and consumers around the world to affect this
process positively by challenging government leaders to set standards
for emissions.

Timberland is challenging world leaders at COP15 to commit to reducing
global emissions even if that means a cap and trade system. Even with
the restrictions that such a model could produce, Timberland is
confident that it would force innovation in industries everywhere and
that businesses, as problem solvers, would find a way to adapt without
passing the cost to the consumer, just as Timberland has

Children are used as ‘emotional footballs’ in divorces

0 Comments | Scotsman (Edinburgh, Scotland), The, Nov 16, 2009

Byline: Mark Smith

MORE than one in three children never see their father again after their parents split up – with children being used as “emotional getting back with ex footballs”, research into family breakdown shows.

Law firm Mishcon de Reya questioned more than 4,000 people about family breakdown to mark the 20th anniversary of the Children Act – brought in to safeguard children after a parental separation.

Researchers found that nearly one in ten is so traumatised by the separation that they have considered suicide. A quarter of the children self-harm because of the trauma, parents believe, and 10 per cent turn to crime.

This is despite 70 per cent of parents saying their children’s welfare is the most important factor in the breakdown.

Mishcon’s head of family law, Sandra Davis, said: “This research shows that, despite their best intentions, parents are often using their children as emotional footballs. They can be seen as tangible objects.

“The feelings can be so raw in a separation. What happens is that the warfare between the parents is played out through the children.

“The process now encourages an adversarial approach, but it needs to be about communication between the parents, trying to find the right lines of communication and going forwards.”

The study found that while 70 per cent of parents cited their child’s welfare as the main priority, children said they felt used (19 per cent), isolated (38 per cent) and alone (37 per cent).

Many admitted they turned to drink and drugs, played truant or self-harmed.

For 38 per cent of children, the separation meant they never saw their father again.

Meanwhile, nearly half of parents said they drew out legal proceedings for their own ends, and 68 per cent admitted using their children as bargaining tools.
