Husband of former Oklahoma CASA exec ordered to stand trial

Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), Nov 23, 2009 by Marie Price

The husband of the former executive director of the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association was ordered Friday to stand trial on charges that he embezzled funds from the organization.

A trial date has not yet been set for Eugene M. Naukam III, 65, who is accused of 41 counts of embezzlement and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. He worked as a special projects coordinator for CASA when his wife, Anna Naukam, was executive director.

The Edmond couple were indicted by the multicounty grand jury in August on allegations that over a six-year period they spent CASA funds on home remodeling, football tickets, cosmetic surgery, vacation, college, dental and veterinary expenses and personal items such as clothing.

Anna Naukam, 51, pleaded guilty in September to 148 counts of embezzlement and one count of conspiracy. She was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation and ordered to pay $549,024 in restitution. Anna Naukam was terminated from CASA in October of last year.

When the indictment was unsealed, Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson said the Naukams were accused of using taxpayer and donated funds for a hot tub ($2,704), football tickets, cosmetic surgery ($8,100), lingerie, granite countertops ($6,004), college tuition for the Naukams’ son ($12,974), and other personal uses.

A state audit report issued in August outlined more than $650,000 allegedly misused by the Naukams.

According to the audit, Eugene Naukam began receiving a $40,000 annual salary in 2006, although Anna Naukam told others he was a volunteer.

The audit stated that Eugene Naukam obtained a CASA credit card in 2002, although he did not become an association employee until 2006
