United earn their Corn to take points off Herrington; Durham Alliance League
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Jan 9, 2008
CORNFORTH United took on Herrington CW and scored an early goal to open the floodgates.
Cornforth were three up by half-time but a goal just after the break eased the pressure on the Herrington goal.
The Sunderland side hit back with another counter, but two late strikes by Cornforth sealed the game in their favour.
Ryton Reserves did the unexpected over high-flying Birtley Town Reserves by winning their first league match of the season 4-2.
It was all Ryton in the first few minutes but Birtley were the first to break the deadlock with a well-taken penalty.
Ryton bounced back to level with a free-kick which left the Birtley defence flat-footed and flew into the back of the net.
It seemed to give Ryton a new freedom and in no time at all they were 2-1 in front – and by the break they had increased that to 3-1.
After the interval Washington hit back to make it 3-2 and just before the end of the game Ryton hit their fourth to take all three points and move away from the foot of the table.
Newton Aycliffe took on Hartlepool Town Reserves and won the three points with a comfortable 6-2 victory thanks to goals from Wood, McNally, Mulroy and Melonby (2).
Brandon British Legion claimed victory over Washington reserves.
It was a 0-0 stalemate at half-time, but after the break Washington hit the post and, from the clearance, Brandon went on the attack and also hit the post – but had some luck when the ball struck the goalkeeper and rolled into the net.
Washington went on the attack from the kick-off and scored with a perfectlystruck shot from the edge of the box.
With time running out, Brandon scored their second with only seconds remaining and then held out until the final whistle.
